Healthy Eating For Fussy Kids & Teens
Children can be the fussiest of eaters, and while it can be a battle to get anything down one child’s throat the next can be a joy to feed.
It’s common sense that in order to be healthy, you need to keep junk food and confectionery to a minimum, however these days its seems to be the other way around in so many cases.
It can be so frustrating for parents to get their children to eat healthy food. Fast food is at every turn and advertised everywhere. Unfortunately it’s cool to eat junk food. The fact that they put toys inside kid’s meals as incentives such as McDonald’s Happy Meals, makes it even more of a challenge.
Let’s face it, it’s easier to get kids to eat junk than it is to get them to eat healthy food. So how can we overcome this dilemma?
1. Disguise food – For example, there is lots of healthy stuff you can add to pizza, like broccoli, mushrooms, peas, beans or even spinach. Hide the healthy stuff among the toppings that they do like, by placing it on the pizza first – by chopping them up very finely chances are they probably won’t even notice.
2. Spruce up food. For example: cream cheese or peanut butter on celery, and use vegetable sticks as dipping sticks.
3. Ranch style dressing or melted cheese on veggies, such as cauliflower, carrots and broccoli.
4. Give you own incentives – If they finish eating their meal, they can have dessert. Make sure you don’t put too much food on their plates, as they will stop when they think they may not have enough room for treats, and then you have a fight on your hands.
5. Puree fruit into smoothies – these are always a great hit with kids and easy to swallow. Put some ice cream or banana’s in to make the texture nice and smooth. You could always sneak a pureed veggie in there, and they wouldn’t even notice amongst the sweetness. Try freezing them too for ice snacks.
Don’t get upset and make a fuss if they don’t eat everything, be reasonable. Stand by the rules, if they haven’t made a reasonable effort to eat their dinner, then no dessert.
Some parents insist their children eat certain vegetables that are not widely palatable, if you don’t like it, chances are neither will your children. Again, be reasonable.
Some kids may prefer eating veggies raw, rather than cooked. I know my own children loved eating “frozen balls” which were frozen peas. Great!
Many adults don’t know how to eat well themselves. With the internet at everyone’s fingertips these days, there is no excuse. The internet is a huge encyclopedia where you will find anything you want to know about.
Try to make mealtimes fun, and all sit down to eat together when you can. Children are little people and love company too. Turn off the TV and all sit down and have your meal together, your chances might be greatly increased without the usual fuss.

Good Eating Habits – Teaching Your Kids To Eat Healthy
Good eating habits are essential to teach your children at a young age. As a mother of 5 myself I have had quite the experience in making sure that my kids eat healthily. With junk food everywhere, it makes it really hard for parents to make sure that their kids are eating healthy. Good eating habits need to be developed at the earliest age possible. Next time, instead of giving your toddler a cookie for a snack try some apple slices or grapes.
If you are a parent of a toddler, this is the perfect time to really create some good eating habits. They are so impressionable at this age. If you are having an apple for a snack they will as well. You cannot expect to eat a candy bar for a snack while they are given fruit. It doesn’t make sense to them, and they want to have what you’re having.
By having good eating habits yourself, you teach them by example. Teaching a child to eat healthy when they have not done so earlier in life is difficult, believe me. I shall use myself as an example. As soon as my daughter was old enough for solid foods, she chewed on apple slices and peaches. During last Easter, she was given a basket of chocolate bunnies and she didn’t want them. Instead, she was asking for bananas. She is now 2 years old by the way. By developing good eating habits early on she will be fixed with those habits for the rest of her life.
Other hand, I adopted 3 girls that were older and had not established any type of healthy diet. That was one really hard thing to change, but by the rest of us eating healthy they learned quickly.
Not only is junk food one of the worst enemies of a balanced diet, fast food has now become a regular part of our lives. We are all too busy to make good healthy meals, so we settle for fast food instead. The fast food industry is taking quite a rap for how horribly unhealthy it is and how it is destroying our good eating habits. The fast food industry is fast realizing that and is now trying to compensate by offering some healthy foods. A good example of this is apple slices are now being offered as desert at certain fast food chains. Even though they are making changes, it is still crucial that a healthy balanced diet is established in the home. Schools have begun offering healthier lunches and are getting some criticism as well. With making sure that your kids eat a healthy breakfast, a well-balanced lunch at school, and a wholesome home cooked dinner, you can really help keep your kids happy, energetic as well as healthy. Unhealthy treats are okay to have every now and then, but they should not become a staple in your home.
Healthy afternoon snacks such as fruit will also help keep your kids disease and illness-free. Studies have proven that kids who do not have a well-balanced and healthy diet tend to have a weaker immune system, hence they fall sick a lot more often than other children.
To ensure that our children develop a mindset to eating healthy throughout their lives, it is up to us as parents to lead by example and show them that good eating habits start at home.

5 Tips To Get Your Kids To Eat Healthy
Kids are notoriously picky eaters. If it doesn’t come in a box with a cute cartoon character promoting it, then they probably aren’t interested. It’s important to get your children to develop healthy eating habits early on, without having to force them to reluctantly choke down something they don’t enjoy. In fact, making them eat certain foods could backfire, leading to binge snacking when you’re not looking and/or having a bad association with a certain food for the rest of their life.
Here are 5 tips to ensure that your child is eating healthy because they know it’s good for them. Teach them early on, and they will continue their nutritious eating habits for the rest of their lives.
1. Teach – First and foremost, talk to your kids and teach them that eating healthy will help them to “grow up and be big and strong”. Just like talks about drugs or smoking, if they know why they should do things a certain way and how it could benefit them, they are much more likely to listen.
2. Variety – If they’ve been eating lots of unhealthy foods and snacks until now, ease them into their new eating habits. For the first few weeks, allow them to continue eating a few of their favorite foods, but mix in something nutritious with the same meal. Just mixing in a sliced apple or a bowl of corn with their dinner will help to widen their palette and develop tastes for new foods.
3. Schedule – Stick to an organized schedule for family meals. If you have breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the same time each day, your child will be hungry at the right times and less likely to fill up on snacks and junk food.
4. Tastes Change – As a child, and even into adulthood, our tastes and flavor preferences can change dramatically. So, just because junior despises the taste of broccoli now, he could develop a taste for it later on. If there’s a specific healthy food your child refuses to eat, reintroduce it in new ways every few weeks. In the case of broccoli, for example, try mixing it in with a salad or chicken wrap to overcome the “ewww broccoli” stereotype.
5. Meal Environment – Try to have all meals in an organized setting with the entire family. If you’re all eating and talking at a dining table without television or other distractions, your children will view mealtime as a pleasant social experience, rather than a minor annoyance they endure in between playtimes.
Put these tips to use starting with your next meal, and you can begin building the foundation for your child’s healthy lifestyle. And, don’t forget to lead by example Mom and Dad!
